Superstar Kid Feature: Ava the S.T.E.M. Princess®

Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting Ava, the S.T.E.M. Princess® and her mom, Tia. Ava has just turned 12, so join me in wishing her a very happy birthday! At 12, Ava is like other kids in that she has hobbies like baking and sewing, and she loves to just play with her dogs and favorite toys. However, Ava has also accomplished many things that most adults only dream of! She is the creator of "Team Genius Squad" and travels to share her love of science and experiments with kids all over the country. She has written books and gives a workshop to kids on how to write their own books. She even sells science kits and a science girl doll on her website. Did I mention that Ava just turned 12?

You might wonder what motivated Ava and her mom to create this magical world that inspires so many young students. According to Ava and her mom, Ava had a hard time learning to read at first. Her school tried to support Ava, but they did not have the appropriate resources. Ava's mom was determined to get the right instruction for her and enlisted the help of an Orton-Gillingham tutor who began to work regularly with Ava. That made all the difference and Ava made significant progress. Building upon Ava's strengths and interests, Ava the S.T.E.M. Princess® was developed and has helped Ava to gain skills in public speaking, reading, and to become a confident, engaging ambassador for all kids, including kids with neurodiversity.

It's wonderful to see how appropriate instruction in structured literacy laid the foundation for Ava's academic success. With a superstar family beside her, Ava has been able to soar. It is evident that she loves what she does and is a true professional, superstar kid!
